Symsido

Symsido was the first nickname that a student ever had for my last name that I actually liked and wished would have been my nickname at some time in history, so this is for Ethan who would have loved this program. He always had a way of finding something to do that was very interesting, but somewhat questionable in its value to his education.

  1. The name thing is a neat connect. My picture would have had two left feet. It's easier to keep track of that way. I use it when giving directions, it's always, 'turn left!... ...no, the other left!' Yep, it's all about keeping it simple. Nice tie BTW. :)

  2. I'd hate to know half of the nicknames my students have given me. No, seriously, it's a great thing when your students can connect with you on a personal level and in away that is inviting you into their lives. I just had an argument the other night with one of my players parents about the need for the athletes to call me coach. He thought it was a must. I simply said that as an experienced teacher and coach, I felt I had a firm grasp on when a student or player was using my name as a sign of respect or a sign of dis-respect. I informed him that the player could use the name Coach just as dis-respectufully as my name. I think it is awesome that your students refer to you kindly no matter how it is that they refer to you. As for your graphic, I love the outfit. You did an excellent job.

  3. Hey Jason, I agree that the graphics programs may be fun, but they definitely lack some educational merit. I could see it as a useful tool as an introductory exercise for computer use or even something fun on a free day or extra credit. I am sure there are lots of ways to be creative with it. And as far as the name calling, I coached golf for 6yrs at the school I teach at before I was a teacher. I let my players call me by my first name and that has been a habit that they have to break now that I see them in school. But I dont make a big deal out of it, when the students respect you and you respect them, that is all that matters.
